"Wow," "O my gosh" and "What the heck is that?" were just a few of the reactions when GolfWeb testers first caught a glimpse of Ping's big, big Doc17 putter.
Launched in the spring, the Doc17 measures 17.02 centimers (6.7 inches) across the face and is more than 3 inches deep.
With a semicircle back bar and three spokes, the putter resembles half a wheel hub. Along with a Doc15 versions introduced later this year, the two putters comprise Ping's Udranium series.
"To the best of our knowledge, no other putter on the market has a comparable MOI," said John Solheim, Ping chairman/CEO.
The Doc17 has a milled aluminum head, alignment lines on the top bar and a nickel-plated finish. The majority of the weight is on the extreme perimeter. The sole design keeps weight low and is contoured to provide enhanced balance and feel.
In demo sessions, GolfWeb testers commented about how remarkably light the Doc putter was, along with a solid feel at impact and an ease in gauging roll speed and distance.
Outfitted with a tacky, black and green grip, suggested retail price is $220 for standard lengths, and $260 for belly and long.
